ABOUT DBSOOPER

DBSooper is the creative outlet of artist Dustin Brown, working out of Decatur, Georgia.

The work isn’t tied to a single medium, style or surface. Paint, pen and ink, analog collage, found imagery, skateboard decks, objects, furniture, paper, canvas — if something can hold an idea, it can probably become part of the work.

The approach is intentionally difficult to categorize. One piece might lean surreal, another graphic, abstract, psychedelic, illustrative or strangely familiar. Styles change. Materials change. The common thread is experimentation, curiosity and the urge to turn ordinary things into something unexpected.

Analog collage remains an important part of the process. Many pieces begin with scissors, old magazines, books, photographs and found imagery. Elements are cut by hand, moved around endlessly, layered, rearranged and eventually assembled into something that never existed before.

Other works may begin with paint, ink, drawing, texture, an unusual object or simply a surface that seems like it deserves a second life.

Skateboard decks have become a natural canvas for much of the work. Part art object, part artifact and part tribute to a culture that has always embraced graphics, experimentation and a little bit of weirdness.

Selected work also escapes the original surface entirely, becoming prints, apparel and other limited pieces.

There isn’t much interest here in developing one recognizable “look” and repeating it forever.

The style is no style.

Use whatever works.

Make strange things.

Make something worth looking at twice.
